Where has all the Farm Land Gone?

My job gives me the opportunity to help all kinds of people. As a person in the Agriculture lending industry for the past 25 years, I have spent most of my time taking care of the true row crop farmers, the cattlemen, poultry farmers, and the fish and fruit growers. However, in the area that I now cover, the day of the true agriculture operation is almost extinct. The area is becoming very commercialized and the price of real estate is sky high. There is no way that the true farmer can justify making a living by raising his crops or cattle on land that is $3,000 to $5,000 per acre.

Yes in this area, the influx of the person who has the desire for 30 acres, a house and a horse are ever increasing. This has driven the price of land sky high and even the most dedicated farmers can't help but think seriously about dividing their land into small tracts to sell for housing development.

As you drive the country roads, as I did today, you see less tractors and cows and more bulldozers and paving machines. The area is becoming one large subdivision.

All I can say is where has all the farm land gone?

The Bombing - Oklahoma City

Lest we Forget!

The Bombing

On April 19, 1995, around 9:03 a.m., just after parents dropped their children off at day care at the Murrah Federal Building in downtown Oklahoma City, the unthinkable happened.

A massive bomb inside a rental truck exploded, blowing half of the nine-story building into oblivion.

A stunned nation watched as the bodies of men, women, and children were pulled from the rubble for nearly two weeks. When the smoke cleared and the exhausted rescue workers packed up and left, 168 people were dead in the worst terrorist attack on U.S. soil.

Just 90 minutes after the explosion, an Oklahoma Highway Patrol officer pulled over 27-year-old Timothy McVeigh for driving without a license plate.

Shortly before he was to be released on April 21, McVeigh was recognized as a bombing suspect and was charged with the bombing.

When McVeigh's ex-Army buddy, Terry Nichols, discovered that he, too, was wanted for questioning, he voluntarily surrendered to police in Herington, Kansas, and was later charged in the bombing.

McVeigh and Nichols are awaiting trial in Denver, Colorado, and could receive the death penalty if convicted of terrorism, murder, and conspiracy charges.

Only two days ago, a young man killed 32 people on a college Campus.

Lets not forget!

Today in History - April 18th

1880 : Missouri is ravaged by tornadoes

Missouri is hit by a string of deadly tornadoes on this day in 1880. Statewide, 151 people were killed by the twisters, including 99 in the town of Marshfield.

The first tornado struck at about 4:30 p.m. in Springfield, Missouri, where seven people lost their lives. It then headed northeast toward the town of Marshfield, which had a population of 1,100. Marshfield suffered terrible losses: nearly every building in the town was either destroyed or seriously damaged and almost one of every 10 residents was killed. Given the damage, it is estimated that the tornado had winds of over 200 miles per hour.

Tornadoes are generally either funnel-shaped or look like a dark smoky cloud reaching down to the ground. They have been known to last from under a minute to as long as an hour. They always spin counter-clockwise in the northern hemisphere.

Although tornadoes can occur anywhere in the world, they are most common in North America. One of the first recorded deaths by twister was that of a pilgrim in Massachusetts, who was killed by one in 1680. However, there were very few tornadoes mentioned in early American historical accounts, probably because they usually occur inland from the Atlantic coast, away from most early settlements.

The first official public tornado warnings were not made until the Civil War. John Park Finley of the Army Signal Corps was one of the first people to systematically study tornadoes. His work led to the first competent predictions of impending twisters in the 1880s. Generally, though, warnings were not regularly issued because authorities feared public panic.

The deadliest tornado on record in North America was a 1925 twister that took nearly 700 lives.

Don't Leave the Farm Boys

I search across the vast knowledge of the internet daily and find things that I think are very interesting to share. Today I found information about the rural life and music that was written in 1871 trying to encourage young men to stay on the farm and not migrate to the big city.

Check this out for yourself. Read the lyrics -
Music for the Nation: American Sheet Music, 1870-1885 contains many songs about farms and the joys of farm life. In the 1870s, nearly three times as many Americans lived on farms or in small towns as in larger cities. Cities were beginning to grow, however. The lyrics below, written by Miss Clara F. Berry in 1871, urge "Boys" to stay on the farm.

View the sheet music of "Don't Leave the Farm Boys."

Come boys, I have something to tell you,
Come near, I would whisper it low,
You're thinking of leaving the homestead,
Don't be in a hurry to go.
The city has many attractions,
But think of the vices and sins,
When once in the vortex of fashion,
How soon the course downward begins.
. . .
You talk of the mines of Australia,
They're wealthy in gold without doubt,
But sh! There is gold on the farm, boys,
If only you'd shovel it out.
The mercantile trade is a hazard,
The goods are first high and then low,
Best risk the old farm a while longer,
Don't be in a hurry to go.
. . .
The great busy west has inducements,
And so has the business mart,
But wealth is not made in a day, boys,
Don't be in a hurry to start.
The bankers and brokers are wealthy,
They take in their thousand or so,
And think of the frauds and deceptions,
Don't be in a hurry to go.
. . .
The farm is the safest and surest,
The orchards are loaded today,
You're free as the air of the mountains,
And monarch of all you survey.
Best stay on the farm a while longer,
Though profits come in rather slow,
Remember you've nothing to risk boy,
Don't be in a hurry to go.

Wished I had said that!

Mortgage Loan Basics

When a person gets ready to borrow for a home loan they need to take into consideration many things before deciding where to get a mortgage loan. This is a loan for potentially hundreds of thousands of dollars and a loan that you might be paying on for the next 30 years. It is one of the biggest decisions that you might ever make. You want to make sure that you spend a good deal of time and energy researching the best mortgage option available to you.

One of the first things is to be approved for a loan by the lending institution. This depends on things like the amount of your income and your credit history. The lending institution will then tell you how much money they are willing to loan you to purchase a house. After approval you will want to shop various mortgage companies to get the best interest rate possible. It may not sound like much on the surface, but a variation of just a few points in the interest rate can quickly add up to tens of thousands of dollars over the life of a 30-year loan.

This is just a few tips especially for first time home buyers. This can be especially true for someone looking for Arizona Mortgages , or for a company who might supply Maryland Mortgages. These states are very hot at this time and many people seem to be making these the state of choice to live.

Whatever you do please know that this information is provided sometimes for a small compensation. However, being a mortgage lender myself, I know that the choice of a good lender or mortgage company upfront if very important in buying a home.

Don Imus

A person would think that a Character like Don Imus would have been carved up a long time ago for some of the things that he says. I have heard things that I thought were a lot worse that he has said in the name of humor. Three words about some Rutgers Basketball players may indeed knock him to his knees.

I don't agree with what he said, but I think the media is using it to go to the extremes. It is being picked up as a race issue when in fact it was only a tacky, attempt at humor.

A question was heard this evening from a news journalist questioning the Al Sharptons of the world about the fact that the 3 LaCrosse Team Players are now being called completely innocent by the prosecuting attorney. Where is Al Sharpton and the protests in this case. If these young men are truly innocent, their entire future has been destroyed because of false accusations.

Where are the protests - Where are the outcrys - Where is the news media on this innocence declaration - They are worrying whether Don Imus was a racist or not?

Sounds like some inconsistencies here!

Just some random thoughts

Coupons Website Saves You Money!

Well, here it is Sunday again and as I go through the Sunday paper the normal routine happens. "What is the normal routine" you ask. Well, I am half way through the paper and the l wife asks for all of the coupons and flyers. This messes up up the routine.

"I am not through with the paper yet" I yell. Well as I duck the looks that I get from the wife, I begin to dig for the coupons. But this time I say "Let me show you about a coupon website at " Well the wife's ears perk up. I think she is real cute when her ears perk up.

Well, I crank up the old internet on that wonderful computer and immediately types in the info for this coupon website which is . You see I am real smart on that internet thing and I know how to get to places like a good coupon website real quick.

Well as expected, my wife squeal with joy, because she is always amazed at how I can find things on that internet like a great saving coupon website so fast. Well that squeal gets me going and I began to tell the wife how he read that this great coupon website was created to help online shoppers to save lots of dollars using coupone codes. Well, still astounded at my knowledge the wife gets even more excited to here how a coupon website provides coupons for lots of stores and services that she uses.

Willy told the wife how that they had coupon website for things like clothing, sporting goods, vitamins, pet supplies, toys, jewelry, gardening, flowers and more. Willy told the little lady with excitement (cause using these coupons could save him money to use on fishing and hunting) how coupon website would have typical coupons like 10% off, 20% off etc.

I even suggested that the wife could go to this coupon website and get a coupon to save big money at Lerner to get some nice new clothes. However the wife liked the idea better to go to Roaman's and get some new clothes from them, just in case I might take her out for her anniversary.

More Quotes From Mayberry - Life as it should be!

Gomer Pyle: Me and Goober are goin' down to see that Cary Grant movie. Goober never misses a Cary Grant movie. He studies him. You want to hear him take off on Cary Grant? C'mon, Goober; do Cary Grant.

Goober Pyle: Well, I don't know...

Andy Taylor: Well, Gom, if he doesn't want to...

Goober Pyle: I'll do it! Judy, Judy, Judy!

Gomer Pyle: [Laughing hysterically] Ain't that great, Andy? How do you do it? Let me try; Judy, Judy, I can't do it. Andy, couldn't you just swear it was Cary Grant standin' right before you in this room?

Andy Taylor: Uh, yeah, Gomer; that was real good, Goober.

Easter Sunday - Give God the Glory

Drug Rehabilitation in America

People who have a drug addiction need to seek out a drug rehab program. I have heard that there is a very good one called Stone Hawk drug rehabilitation center. It is stated to be one of the most successful inpatient drug rehab in the country stated tp be offering a 76%+ success rate.

Stone Hawk drug rehabilitation program doesn't teach anyone's morals and codes. It believes that society already has its own laws. What they do, is direct students that come into the drug rehab program to discover that they can have a lifestyle without drug addiction or alcoholism. The individual is left to determine his own morals and codes that they can live by. The person is left to make the decisions for themselves and how they want to improve. In short - they use what they call New Life Detoxification Program for drug detox (Saunas) to sweat the drugs (toxins) out of the body.

Then they show the student what ethics are, they make the decision to change their life - the Center just directs them by showing them the path to freedom. Helping someone recognize their addiction and giving them the ability to end it - is what this drug rehab is all about. They want to help people start a new life.

After reading about them on their website, I know of people that this could help and even though I get minor compensation for writing about this. I believe this is a good idea for those in need of drug rehab.
